Having a massive case of the "I miss France" right now, so here is another great French wine label from the village of saint Estephe, in the Medoc region of Bordeaux. Check out the fantastic website from the château, whose history dates back the the 1600's:<a href="http://www.chateautourdestermes.com/index.php/en/histoire.html." target="_blank"> http://www.chateautourdestermes.com/index.php/en/histoire.html.</a><br />

I am loving this label, and as you can tell, it is ooooooold. I found this label recently stashed away in my wine label box. A bit wrinkled but still looking good, for a label that is 44 years old. The best price I found online for this bottle is about $2,000. Definitely on my list of wine I will never be able to afford but at least I do have a label :) This wine is big and bold, with a mix of 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc. Please do let me know how it tastes if you ever get to taste this one...Wine and Corkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17738480294768191824noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5218574422491098080.post-70190186750382215712012-06-06T07:11:00.000-07:002013-03-14T16:11:40.262-07:00{Wine Label} Pommard, Burgundy<div>

Pommard is a village in the Cote de Beaune sub-region of Burgundy famous for producing powerful, tannic and richly flavored red wines. They are made from Pinot Noir grapes, with which the commune's vineyards are almost exclusively planted. The Pommard appellation covers only red wines.Wine and Corkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17738480294768191824noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5218574422491098080.post-33844554364826711002012-03-22T07:21:00.000-07:002012-03-22T07:21:47.673-07:00{DIY} Recycled Wine Bottle Candles<div><br />

</div><div>Yeah, yeah, I know, I've completely been slacking off lately and have not posted nearly enough in the last month or so, I hope you will forgive me, as I have been busy catching up with some great BBC series, which are completely addictive and always require that I watch an unmentionable number of episodes in a row of such shows as "Cranford," "Lark Rise to Candleford," "Mildred Pierce" or "Sherlock," to name a few...I'm taking a 30 minute break to share this little DIY with you today... :)</div><div><br />
</div>I buy candles quite frequently, and usually stick to the kind that comes in a large glass jar (like the ones made by Yankee Candle). Unfortunately, they always seem to burn very unevenly and I always end up with a candle that's completely burned down on one side, making it impossible to get to the other side. It kind of looks like this:<div><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRoy5wUFZ7AqlJVfxC1Tb_4cULzVv93tzsduVdeNdp2Ihl3Vz2S27oL22xe7SnNoEDLMRtDQdNLDchH55i3akx5IK3GVTpaSmKVz-s1JuIu3glUnrb0mra8fSE7PkfsxP96nFGMLS9VMc/s1600/IMG_1338.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRoy5wUFZ7AqlJVfxC1Tb_4cULzVv93tzsduVdeNdp2Ihl3Vz2S27oL22xe7SnNoEDLMRtDQdNLDchH55i3akx5IK3GVTpaSmKVz-s1JuIu3glUnrb0mra8fSE7PkfsxP96nFGMLS9VMc/s320/IMG_1338.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div> </div><div>Time to recycle that wax, as well as some of those empty wine bottles you have (hopefully) been saving...I gave you some tips for an easier way to cut wine bottles on <a href="http://www.wineandcork.blogspot.com/2012/02/diy-how-to-successfully-cut-glass.html" target="_blank">this post</a> a while back, and if you haven't already done so, now is the time to cut some of those empty bottles. You will need:</div><div><br />
</div><div><ul><li>Cut wine glasses (decide on the height of the candle holders based on how much wax you have)</li>
<li>(soy) wicks (available at any craft store. Be sure to choose the right height for your candle holders)</li>
<li>Wooden skewers (to hold the wick up)</li>
<li>Masking tape (or other type of tape)</li>
<li>Pot of water (to melt the wax with)</li>
</ul><div><br />
</div><div><b>Step 1:</b></div></div><div><br />
</div><div>Melt the wax by placing the jar in a pan of simmering water, and allow the wax to melt completely. Take out the old wick.</div><div><br />

Check out this colorful <a href="https://www.bonnydoonvineyard.com/red_wines/" target="_blank">Bonny Doon</a> wine label (and it's a printable one, too!), reminiscent of a medieval tarot card, quite a work of art, don't you think? Not only is this label one to save, but the wine itself apparently comes highly recommended, definitely on my "to-try" list! For an unbiased review of this wine, check out the <a href="http://www.reversewinesnob.com/2011/05/2008-bonny-doon-le-pousseur-syrah.html" target="_blank">Reverse Wine Snob blog</a> (and while you are there, be sure to check out his many other wine-under-$20 reviews, before you go wine shopping...)<br />
<br />
Bonny Doon has many, many other wonderful labels, about which I will be posting soon, but for now, I hope you will enjoy this one. Cheers!Wine and Corkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17738480294768191824noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5218574422491098080.post-60798947112364510942012-02-28T07:23:00.000-08:002012-02-28T07:23:26.230-08:00{Wine Label} Chateau La Grolet & Peybonhomme, France<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">As far as labels go, I am a total sucker for traditional French labels...you know, the ones with beautiful castles and all of the little ornaments that makes them so typically French, and give them that "noble" touch. I love imagining what it would be like to actually call one of those chateaux "Home." I'm afraid I'll never know :)</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Today, I have two such labels: Chateau La Grolet and Chateau Peybonhomme Les Tours, both from the Bordeaux region. If you ever drive through that area, it wouldn't be a bad idea to squeeze in a tour of these two wineries... :)</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

I used the wine stained parts of the corks to create the vine grape, and the word "VIN," which is "wine", in French ~ but I am sure you already knew that :) Before gluing the pieces, I arranged them the way I wanted them to appear. Make sure it is centered the way you want on the tray. Once you are happy with the way it looks, glue each piece with all-purpose glue. I do not recommend using hot glue, since that will not allow to correct mistakes along the way. With all-purpose glue, you will be able to adjust as needed before it dries.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-GYPzGllGjxhANnt0Jv5LflRBkVcRokut8SUMToxqAgQi6iKnBqxL8PwuZ0Di1NPCogqoLJc70JN_F-3tkiJ0TcJtpKDNzlNf9-rUjtLt6LqDQhoM5vw8AxYsa9Kkndb8o8KhCp3Fu4Q/s1600/IMG_1404.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-GYPzGllGjxhANnt0Jv5LflRBkVcRokut8SUMToxqAgQi6iKnBqxL8PwuZ0Di1NPCogqoLJc70JN_F-3tkiJ0TcJtpKDNzlNf9-rUjtLt6LqDQhoM5vw8AxYsa9Kkndb8o8KhCp3Fu4Q/s400/IMG_1404.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<br />
<b>Step 3:</b><br />
<b><br />
</b><br />
Fill in all the areas around the wine stained pieces with natural colored cork pieces. It will be like putting a puzzle together. Start with the round pieces, then fill in the "blanks" with smaller, made-to-fit pieces.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4XctSGp8J4bdx1_P9dHuiXJEdSDTxwF0HkMsPXnuALZHWbzcqlreASekbNl1Fxtjlkowb2LtsTxN985ktJAvF9W2Z5sByUY8GZ7yeG9ExZAEB6yN1Mgf6XxMceD3vSO86AYyx3EVpHy0/s1600/IMG_1406.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4XctSGp8J4bdx1_P9dHuiXJEdSDTxwF0HkMsPXnuALZHWbzcqlreASekbNl1Fxtjlkowb2LtsTxN985ktJAvF9W2Z5sByUY8GZ7yeG9ExZAEB6yN1Mgf6XxMceD3vSO86AYyx3EVpHy0/s400/IMG_1406.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />

<br />
If you'd like to darken the wine color on your design, you can use actual red wine and apply it with a small paint brush to the areas you wish to darken (another perfectly good excuse to crack open a bottle!). Be careful not to go over any part you do not want darken, because the wine will stain it right away. I'm loving this label... I can see it as a poster hanging in my dining room as an accent piece, giving it a real pop of color...It is quite simple, yet its beautiful color palette caught my eye. It reminds me of fireworks or a flower field with a bright sunshine pouring its light onto it.<br />
<br />
This label hails from northwestern Spain, near Galicia. <a href="http://www.wineenthusiast.com/" target="_blank">Wine Enthusiast</a> gave it a 90 point rating for its 2010 vintage, not too shabby, and an exceptional value at around $14. It has "Intense, yet clean fragrances of tropical white fruit make up the bouquet. On the palate, it is refreshing and crisp with grassy notes. A well-balanced wine with a rounded mouthfeel and lingering finish of slight, pleasant bitterness. This wine makes a perfect aperitif, but also is a great accompaniment to sushi and raw shellfish." (Wine Enthusiast).<br />
<br />
I consider myself more of a red wine lover than a white wine one, and I loved it! Very refreshing, especially on a warm summer day, it can be enjoyed as a pre-dinner drink, or with a meal, or both :)Wine and Corkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17738480294768191824noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5218574422491098080.post-18267640702913676152012-02-16T05:34:00.000-08:002012-02-28T08:04:20.014-08:00{DIY} Upcycle that (empty) 1800 Tequila bottle!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">From an empty bottle of 1800 Tequila..... .....To a pretty, practical bath salt container </td></tr>
</tbody></table><br />
Ok, so this has nothing to do with wine, or cork, but it does have something to do with alcohol, so technically, this post does belong on this blog...right? ;)<br />
<br />
Anyway, my husband just recently finished a bottle of 1800 Tequila (not all at once, it did take few weeks for that to happen, no worries!), and he pointed out the fact that it really was a nicely designed bottle and that it'd be a waste to throw it out. Of course, that had my wheels turning and, out of absolute necessity, I decided to recycle the bottle as a bath salt holder (and yes, taking long baths with a glass of wine and some great music in the background IS an absolute necessity in my world...) by making my own bath salt and decorating the bottle for its new purpose. The 1800 Tequila bottle makes a great container because you can easily pour the salts right into your bath.<br />
<br />
<b>Step 1:</b><br />
<br />
Clean the bottle and take off the stickers on the front and back, which I did by soaking in very hot water for while, then scraping off the paper, and finally removing the remnants of glue with "Goo Gone."<br />
<br />
<b>Step 2:</b><br />
<b><br />
</b><br />
Make your own bath salt mixture, by mixing <b>1 cup coarse salt</b>, <b>1/2 cup Epsom salt,</b> and <b>1/4 baking soda</b> (this will be your base, to which you can add whatever you'd like for scent).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxa_iBbIVjqWsKVWIzuwsIr_-xnswXgiGBPxped03ePlExwgvCXScrWa3GQ0FHrMifLxLzhpDfAxL5YDkRuZRJbDOg_KgOXAEk8FYCDVHL5MH48kka9KgMK4SpCDMTmcxN77vpjeNfoHc/s1600/IMG_1363.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxa_iBbIVjqWsKVWIzuwsIr_-xnswXgiGBPxped03ePlExwgvCXScrWa3GQ0FHrMifLxLzhpDfAxL5YDkRuZRJbDOg_KgOXAEk8FYCDVHL5MH48kka9KgMK4SpCDMTmcxN77vpjeNfoHc/s320/IMG_1363.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
The next steps can be altered according to your preferences. I added:<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;"> <b>1 tablespoon Lemon peel</b> (for a nice citrus scent) :</div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBMRWOWOHkmnXGqCG6x-hKubzq8Tm0vsvPrjLi0EVRDb6TgCDFnu14qXivb0qELDcIwAvx5Cl3cAmzaZFcdFgqGoB7HdmlUAO7dSUko6kqP_r8nDKbeN3jzPfAZ3emz-jub2sk5qwO0TE/s1600/IMG_1364.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBMRWOWOHkmnXGqCG6x-hKubzq8Tm0vsvPrjLi0EVRDb6TgCDFnu14qXivb0qELDcIwAvx5Cl3cAmzaZFcdFgqGoB7HdmlUAO7dSUko6kqP_r8nDKbeN3jzPfAZ3emz-jub2sk5qwO0TE/s320/IMG_1364.JPG" width="240" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"><b>2 tablespoons (melted) Organic Coconut oil</b> (acts as a moisturizer):</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKXAYCDzZjE_lwHJq13XSg_iaCnIe_arSVq9igdRcUW2zh4G6JbR5VXMhhuPHHS0G4Xo8gmqm8PPIX02NfrSK0an4IPuGxulg1xmoRhZQhIUa9PrrSaHdri-ct5a0ZMbtatHWTwThJY1Y/s1600/IMG_1365.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKXAYCDzZjE_lwHJq13XSg_iaCnIe_arSVq9igdRcUW2zh4G6JbR5VXMhhuPHHS0G4Xo8gmqm8PPIX02NfrSK0an4IPuGxulg1xmoRhZQhIUa9PrrSaHdri-ct5a0ZMbtatHWTwThJY1Y/s320/IMG_1365.JPG" width="240" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Next, I added a <b>few drops of lemon, vanilla and coconut extract</b>. You can use essential oils instead of extracts, but those are more expensive and less easy to find. I didn't want to have to order them online and wait to get them so I used extracts I already had in my pantry. These will work well if you don't have essential oils on hand.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Mix everything really well, making sure there are no lumps (I used my hands and found it easier to mix)</div><br />

<div style="text-align: center;">There are plenty of bath salt recipes out on the web, here are some websites I thought had some nice recipes:</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"></div><ul><li><a href="http://tipnut.com/5-homemade-bath-salts-soaks/">http://tipnut.com/5-homemade-bath-salts-soaks/</a> (this site uses ingredients from your pantry, with no hard to find products!)</li>

<li><br />
</li>
</ul><br />
<b>Step 3:</b><br />
<b><br />
</b><br />
Now let's decorate the bottle. I printed out a card stock sheet of paper with the words "Sel de bain" (Bath salts in French), and using an exacto knife, I created a stencil (be very careful with that type of knife, they are wicked sharp!)...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGHdVcHygTvLSEHr0X2FTIUAfqqZYbA9IrRE0RLnSNCn2nUngmnHMR-JfS62VR8Oqwi5PSunLvgtQHCU5hGisG8jPVsDs3VUAOckbKKeKzeT9x6BF_U0XDIGA0uWCYtKRfbJPHOzAnaPU/s1600/IMG_1367.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGHdVcHygTvLSEHr0X2FTIUAfqqZYbA9IrRE0RLnSNCn2nUngmnHMR-JfS62VR8Oqwi5PSunLvgtQHCU5hGisG8jPVsDs3VUAOckbKKeKzeT9x6BF_U0XDIGA0uWCYtKRfbJPHOzAnaPU/s320/IMG_1367.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
...which I then attached to the bottle, using regular tape:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5zwa9L254B9sKSZGFgT4ytG3JFRcYOz-R1rmum7oMD7E8VceDzjscnERSbtVxmYiZrWDeKH1qa5F_mAztQPELtn3nKHq1RsEIZ8Df8CpxAtDza33v7WmxsUsOZez0YL54nXorAMhXNME/s1600/IMG_1368.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5zwa9L254B9sKSZGFgT4ytG3JFRcYOz-R1rmum7oMD7E8VceDzjscnERSbtVxmYiZrWDeKH1qa5F_mAztQPELtn3nKHq1RsEIZ8Df8CpxAtDza33v7WmxsUsOZez0YL54nXorAMhXNME/s320/IMG_1368.JPG" width="240" /></a></div><br />
I wanted to give the writing lots of texture, so I mixed some champagne colored glitter (which I already had from past Christmas crafts) with some brown metallic paint (which I also already had). These products were purchased at Michael's for about $5.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCBCQSTG7bH3IrexCStNwySdxVJ-33_Dg6bII7JbRxKDRQ-i0EOW6Pb5elR9GWYn-E2fRb7J3sgnj6Zrt6plSfxPh6nRpqeiVzGHd3PmE8n2t9OdKBpPnrNSKvob1HkELRdOKGIgBBaPU/s1600/IMG_1370.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCBCQSTG7bH3IrexCStNwySdxVJ-33_Dg6bII7JbRxKDRQ-i0EOW6Pb5elR9GWYn-E2fRb7J3sgnj6Zrt6plSfxPh6nRpqeiVzGHd3PmE8n2t9OdKBpPnrNSKvob1HkELRdOKGIgBBaPU/s320/IMG_1370.JPG" width="240" /></a></div><br />
<br />
Mix the pain and glitter:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMpR2Ib1QJdre4yxhScnM5U4pbBakwsOgU32-y52p4IY5UIlTxaX3C05pszytdEjtlpw3IbyauHAMSIjm1hWocr1KRTfxhNyo_qY6BiLQQnJaWZ94q9g6nrvlEtXSxLiKXiE-3aT2SzNU/s1600/IMG_1371.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="188" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMpR2Ib1QJdre4yxhScnM5U4pbBakwsOgU32-y52p4IY5UIlTxaX3C05pszytdEjtlpw3IbyauHAMSIjm1hWocr1KRTfxhNyo_qY6BiLQQnJaWZ94q9g6nrvlEtXSxLiKXiE-3aT2SzNU/s400/IMG_1371.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
I then applied the paint mixture in a thick layer with a small brush onto the bottle using the stencil as a guide:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_C6lW5py71Ydhemgrdqc1ryejsE3TqFd3GZbapYtYXlt5cVf_SPTUEtNOVncS3EchkyDQok_hBUf6xYy-eb8EXTQ8yY3RDguApjans9PiUeNN67WGDvsLbqEjEDrfdHbN9R-z01wMgec/s1600/IMG_1373.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_C6lW5py71Ydhemgrdqc1ryejsE3TqFd3GZbapYtYXlt5cVf_SPTUEtNOVncS3EchkyDQok_hBUf6xYy-eb8EXTQ8yY3RDguApjans9PiUeNN67WGDvsLbqEjEDrfdHbN9R-z01wMgec/s320/IMG_1373.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
To decorate the neck of the bottle, I wrapped some hemp cord all the way around enough times to cover the entire width of the neck of the bottle. I then glued a fleur de lys wax seal onto the hemp. I "borrowed" ~ok, I stole it :) ~ this awesome idea from the multi-talented <a href="http://www.leahmariebrownhistoricals.blogspot.com/" target="_blank"><b>Leah Marie Brown</b> </a>off her <b>Etsy shop</b> <a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/87069108/vintage-inspired-french-votive-old">HERE.</a> (how adorable are her votive jars? And SO affordable!). Many thanks to Leah Marie for letting me use her idea!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJL5JTI5X46V3TDNZA6P4TXOASbELpRJFYDNM8Ke8b238qNQMhxu_KJoJmWYGav3hoHTTPaWl6Jk4cDM_LUkafg3jlcYPkwDJY-CcO75RYbKbcZ6XwTofs55XR8nk6LPRigdRi4D42RXI/s1600/IMG_1380.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJL5JTI5X46V3TDNZA6P4TXOASbELpRJFYDNM8Ke8b238qNQMhxu_KJoJmWYGav3hoHTTPaWl6Jk4cDM_LUkafg3jlcYPkwDJY-CcO75RYbKbcZ6XwTofs55XR8nk6LPRigdRi4D42RXI/s320/IMG_1380.JPG" width="240" /></a></div><br />
Finally, I wanted to cover up the top part of the lid, which had "1800" on it, so I used the same paint mixture and poured it on top, and covered up the entire surface. It needed to be quite thick to cover up the writing, so don't be shy about the amount of paint you use.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3vIzrg37V6kDFCbjZQwf0-89O-GnlN-1xkyIM5J8mP1Wt-RgS4jurqcTNXMScukhqluXs8YGsR1nvguOH7FS4tll3IhKXWMK27cta7Br20Eo3jrE372N1Dp40bGA4SeZNBS9tq6c_6Fo/s1600/IMG_1376.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="183" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3vIzrg37V6kDFCbjZQwf0-89O-GnlN-1xkyIM5J8mP1Wt-RgS4jurqcTNXMScukhqluXs8YGsR1nvguOH7FS4tll3IhKXWMK27cta7Br20Eo3jrE372N1Dp40bGA4SeZNBS9tq6c_6Fo/s400/IMG_1376.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<br />
After I let it dry overnight (because it was so thick), I applied a coat of triple-thick gloss glaze (available at Michael's). And the final result...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRvxiShxKS1hD4QA1Zc0opqeCYHSVOrkh7G5haJeKgV_Q8ZMRhRK4gGUlukhTvEWusFOlErX5FyfOtoDQch1hFiLhluKbhUDqSbcmAMJv1PIeGPZtWyuTuxnjv9HIcKLsFxIWPIhpC2z8/s1600/IMG_1390.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="271" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRvxiShxKS1hD4QA1Zc0opqeCYHSVOrkh7G5haJeKgV_Q8ZMRhRK4gGUlukhTvEWusFOlErX5FyfOtoDQch1hFiLhluKbhUDqSbcmAMJv1PIeGPZtWyuTuxnjv9HIcKLsFxIWPIhpC2z8/s400/IMG_1390.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />

Now you have a great reason to go take a long, hot bath!Wine and Corkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17738480294768191824noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5218574422491098080.post-737111863177204752012-02-13T09:28:00.000-08:002012-02-13T09:28:10.562-08:00{Wine Label} Happy Valentine's Day!For Valentine's Day, I cannot think of anything more perfect than these two labels:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Chateau Calon-Segur, from the Medoc region of France is a big and bold type of wine, the kind that will reach maturity after a few decades. </div><br />
"Calon" meaning little river skiff used in Middle Ages to ferry timber across the Gironde estuary, gave name to the district which was at one point known as Calones or Saint-Estèphe-de-Calon. In early times, Château Calon-Ségur was one of the original three vineyards in Saint-Estèphe, and in 1825 Château Montrose (in 1855 classified as a Second Growth) was a forest-land parcel belonging to the Calon-Ségur estate.<br />
<br />
By marriage, the estate came to be owned by Nicolas-Alexandre, marquis de Ségur who also owned Chateau Latour and Chateau Lafite. Despite his ownership of these two First Growths, the Marquis said that his "heart was with Calon" and the wine's label today includes a drawing of a heart around the Chateau's name. (source: Wikipedia) This wine is a keeper and will run you about $75.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1sqr_hkgMAdYhY9VixzT7EIsEweWTtRhwCQRJRs2QSgh5qJG_3xdkvZfjnV3z4tcCY_2aCaJ3YCZ23YbuBiSoKGAc1JE8BjdAHDvyM7Ur-4-3hsIC05IbRcsEC2q4zMqX9wVZrTj_-Hc/s1600/calon.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="373" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1sqr_hkgMAdYhY9VixzT7EIsEweWTtRhwCQRJRs2QSgh5qJG_3xdkvZfjnV3z4tcCY_2aCaJ3YCZ23YbuBiSoKGAc1JE8BjdAHDvyM7Ur-4-3hsIC05IbRcsEC2q4zMqX9wVZrTj_-Hc/s400/calon.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">This next label hails from the <a href="http://www.quadywinery.com/" target="_blank">California Quady Winery</a>. Elysium means "heaven" in Greek. This flavorful dessert wine is best served slightly chilled. You can drink instead of dessert, or have it with dessert (even though I'd opt for the first option since this wine is so sweet already). It pairs well with blue cheeses, desserts containing red fruits (such as summer pudding), vanilla, dark chocolate and ice cream desserts.(about $23)</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFdCjpF-dF6Udb1Cz1pq0oAp4aHei4IZbzA1Wee3AHa-k8FgX8jsPKMalOzxggqoNEYA26d_uAiNfqQohCeGZYLc62m98bjqX7wg91VHpWPssrEzuykOg-48-PMOR23p13slxRMg9rqdI/s1600/elysium_label_high.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="326" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFdCjpF-dF6Udb1Cz1pq0oAp4aHei4IZbzA1Wee3AHa-k8FgX8jsPKMalOzxggqoNEYA26d_uAiNfqQohCeGZYLc62m98bjqX7wg91VHpWPssrEzuykOg-48-PMOR23p13slxRMg9rqdI/s400/elysium_label_high.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

Someone then asked me "what would one do with the glass once cut?" Great question. A wine bottle Lantern one of my answers! (because I will have more projects coming your way involving cut bottles, but let's take it one project at a time....). You can make your lantern more interesting by choosing bottles that have an etched design, like the middle bottle you can see below, which shows an <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Occitan_cross" target="_blank">Occitan cross</a> from my home region of the Languedoc-Roussillon in southwestern France.<br />

This idea isn't new, you have probably seen those in stores or for sale online, and most of the time, they aren't cheap. Why spend too much money when you don't have to (I already had all of the material required for this project and my only extra expense was for the stain, which cost less than $5)? This post will show the steps to making the cork base (onto which the candle can safely melt) and how to assemble the lantern, which can also make a great and unique gift! The cork bases can be used as drink coasters.<br />
<br />
<b>MAKING THE BASE:</b><br />
<b><br />
</b><br />
You will need:<br />
<br />
<ul><li>19 corks: make sure they are of similar heights!</li>
<li>Hot glue gun</li>
<li>A saw (a coping saw is best but I didn't have one so I used a backsaw)</li>
<li>Wood stain (I chose a dark walnut color)</li>
<li>Sponge brush</li>
<li>Clear acrylic sealer</li>
<li>Rubber band</li>
<li>Candles</li>
</ul><div><b><br />
</b></div><div><b>Step 1:</b></div><div><b><br />
</b></div><div>Arrange the corks the way you will want to glue them. The following pattern is easy and requires 19 corks:</div><div><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6Tq0g2IMwy1E5LRWQC4bJ6LpnFLBchOhR-HAZb1cgSq3NEejKaRxs2XQznBCwEGQ4sWFRO8k38KPHM1PM_d8l_OfAm-VpViFp9wVaVSHohBIVe4p2E2VMadCZdgXS59_OpS_o4FubM2w/s1600/IMG_1319.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6Tq0g2IMwy1E5LRWQC4bJ6LpnFLBchOhR-HAZb1cgSq3NEejKaRxs2XQznBCwEGQ4sWFRO8k38KPHM1PM_d8l_OfAm-VpViFp9wVaVSHohBIVe4p2E2VMadCZdgXS59_OpS_o4FubM2w/s400/IMG_1319.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><div><br />
</div><br />
Starting from the middle, as seen in the photo below, assemble the corks with a hot glue gun:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinNjoPDvsh5r8kmUBMTVYLWmw3ddzuXB1LmPjZbn0Ycf4qxE0gq7HRyVIOSnNWEcww-jA0EOIhlWV0odiC24T_L-1Xu367rIgFykGfWhGsLO8ziuA3Ac4AWUmPX9tnxhAFiIYxsRi371Y/s1600/IMG_1320.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinNjoPDvsh5r8kmUBMTVYLWmw3ddzuXB1LmPjZbn0Ycf4qxE0gq7HRyVIOSnNWEcww-jA0EOIhlWV0odiC24T_L-1Xu367rIgFykGfWhGsLO8ziuA3Ac4AWUmPX9tnxhAFiIYxsRi371Y/s400/IMG_1320.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
Continue assembling the corks row by row, going towards the outside:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVG6SEp2JHqoLQa-emhLvC_AY4IQXYRqWaMjBhTq3ifIVcWxmNtxeb19E5f2pCxjjFhMAVgHlUsGmTOAbLomG4nXDqxs1hyphenhyphenr_H384B67kFGaQ4CY38e2EyehppcsyeVRpHrfCIg8Z49Jg/s1600/IMG_1321.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVG6SEp2JHqoLQa-emhLvC_AY4IQXYRqWaMjBhTq3ifIVcWxmNtxeb19E5f2pCxjjFhMAVgHlUsGmTOAbLomG4nXDqxs1hyphenhyphenr_H384B67kFGaQ4CY38e2EyehppcsyeVRpHrfCIg8Z49Jg/s400/IMG_1321.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
Finished result will look like this:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixuQTgEHmbQFw_MbUOw0fu2tkIcBiSeOksa4XpC5YUVQO5BQ_RTIR0ag5yXmKSF2mvsWd36VmYyBqEBGvtYaTOf64o4mmrG7yA-qr2CmCxIPFHMidIWamTzOqApOPXRaEfvho8f9GYzWA/s1600/IMG_1322.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixuQTgEHmbQFw_MbUOw0fu2tkIcBiSeOksa4XpC5YUVQO5BQ_RTIR0ag5yXmKSF2mvsWd36VmYyBqEBGvtYaTOf64o4mmrG7yA-qr2CmCxIPFHMidIWamTzOqApOPXRaEfvho8f9GYzWA/s400/IMG_1322.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<b>Step 2:</b><br />
<b><br />
</b><br />
Put a rubber band around the assembled corks for extra sturdiness, and with a saw, cut all the way through to create one base. Continue until you have 4 bases:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkA-YRuYyMU66OjmTtsGYGOCmvefeXtQzqot3D_uneZA-sqVT4HZvs93qAufnS-i2_sxbghRUnfUzIR1ldnxU1PEKij8zgvWdANFsP5pSw43V-AGfNGnfgnCg1uPa5eeSqdm5JlmL0530/s1600/IMG_1326.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkA-YRuYyMU66OjmTtsGYGOCmvefeXtQzqot3D_uneZA-sqVT4HZvs93qAufnS-i2_sxbghRUnfUzIR1ldnxU1PEKij8zgvWdANFsP5pSw43V-AGfNGnfgnCg1uPa5eeSqdm5JlmL0530/s400/IMG_1326.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />

<b>Step 3: </b><br />
<b><br />
</b><br />
This step is completely optional, and you could be done right here and choose to keep your corks a natural color. I chose to stain the bases with a dark walnut stain, bought at a hardware store. Apply the stain with a sponge brushes on all sides:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtoD6Dk-JZGsezaI2yFpANZDEh5M7Kpo4zqhmZTUT8wm2wF64bC2sgucVwATCt2UdxEEgPFW8nOQrIow-RonDnPsTZjIlnLpEkT261YSmks-0Q6N_nfVS9HGeZS0LtS7_xPMDuHzRKGU0/s1600/IMG_1330.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtoD6Dk-JZGsezaI2yFpANZDEh5M7Kpo4zqhmZTUT8wm2wF64bC2sgucVwATCt2UdxEEgPFW8nOQrIow-RonDnPsTZjIlnLpEkT261YSmks-0Q6N_nfVS9HGeZS0LtS7_xPMDuHzRKGU0/s400/IMG_1330.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />

<b>ASSEMBLY OF THE LANTERNS:</b><br />
<b><br />
</b><br />
Take the wine bottles you have already cut (using a bottle cutter and the tips from my<a href="http://www.wineandcork.blogspot.com/2012/02/diy-how-to-successfully-cut-glass.html" target="_blank"> tutorial</a>), place a candle on the base, then cover with the bottle, and you are done! How easy was that????<br />

I am writing "was," because it seems that Dan Philips, the company's founder, filed for bankruptcy back in 2010. I'm not sure what the current status of the Marquis Philips winery is today, but if you do find some bottles at your local wine shops, or anywhere else for that matter, I'd be sure to grab a few, since they are no longer producing their line, but are still liquidating their existing stock. I do know for a fact that these super affordable wines (most under $15), are some of the tastiest wines I have had at that price, and I now only wish I would have stocked up on it. If you can't get your hands on a bottle, here are at least 3 of their labels, which I thought were quite eye-catching:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

Well, after <i>many </i>unsuccessful tries, I have FINALLY found the (almost) magic formula.<br />
<br />
I first tried the option where you use a cotton string soaked in acetone and set on fire. Major fail. Not one bottle crack. Moving on to the next option: buying a glass cutter and following instructions. Another major fail. I wasted about 5 bottles following their instructions (I tried 2 different types of cutters, one bought at Michael's, and one ordered on Amazon, called G2 bottle cutter). The bottles did crack, but in all the wrong places. After a lot of trial and error, I will share with you the "secret" to successfully cutting your old wine bottles in half.<br />
<br />
<b><br />
</b><br />

Your score should look like this (see the line in the center of the photo. As you can see, it is very thin, and that is all you need to break the glass).<br />

After you have used the flame to weaken the score line (about 4 times), you will now place the bottle in the simmering hot water for 5 seconds, then the ice cold water for 5 seconds. Keep doing that until the bottles breaks at the score line.<br />

Use tongs to take the glass out if it breaks in your simmering hot water. <b>The last step will be to sand down the line to make sure you take the sharpness away from the bottle.</b><br />
<br />
(note: the glass on this photo broke in the cold water, I removed all of the ice after the water got cold enough so you could see the break, but you can just leave the ice in the water for the duration of the process)<br />
<br />
<b><br />
</b><br />
<b>What I have learned through trial and error:</b><br />
<br />
<ul><li>Your score line needs to be constant and very thin and not too deep.</li>
<li>NEVER go backwards when scoring. If you miss a spot, go back over that spot, and spot ONLY.</li>
<li>Stop scoring as soon as you have gone all the way around and hit your starting point. NEVER go back over a score (your bottle will break in all the wrong places if you do).</li>
<li>Some bottles are easier to cut than others, depending on the thickness and type of glass. </li>
<li>Most instructions tell you to use lubricating oil on the cutting wheel, I just used some Pam spray and it worked perfectly.</li>
<li>Be sure to tighten all screws on your glass cutter as they will tend to loosen up as you use it, which will cause uneven lines.</li>
<li>Patience is key. Do not rush any step of the process.</li>
</ul><div>Next time, I will show you what I have done with those bottles, but in the meanwhile, happy glass cutting!</div>Wine and Corkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17738480294768191824noreply@blogger.com25tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5218574422491098080.post-23919863284440204752012-01-25T08:50:00.000-08:002012-01-25T08:50:25.054-08:00Meletti: An Italian TraditionThis post is going to be a bit off topic, since it does not involve any type of wine related product or label. Today will be about "apéritif" time, my favorite time of day. "Apéritif" (derived from the Latin word <i>aperire </i>which means "to open") time is a sacred time in most European countries, but mostly in Mediterranean countries such as Italy, France or Spain. It is usually served before a meal to stimulate the appetite, but it has become a bit of a social ritual, a time when families and friends meet up at a local café, bistro, or at someone's house, a time to catch up and chat it up. I always very much look forward to that experience whenever I go back home to France. It truly is a cultural expectation, and that is when I really feel at home.<br />
<br />
The kind of apéritif served will vary from country to country. In France, it even varies by region: Pastis will be served in the south of France (especially near Marseilles), Calvados brandy in the Normandy region, Pineau in the Charente region (where my grandmother lives), but a simple glass of wine such as a Beaujolais Nouveau (something on the lighter side, usually), can also be served. I especially like a Martini (an Italian brand of Vermouth) and a good Pineau as an apéritif.<br />

I am going to tell you a little bit about the </span><i style="text-align: left;">aperitivo</i><span style="text-align: left;"> maker </span><a href="http://www.meletti.it/UK/products.html" style="text-align: left;" target="_blank">Meletti</a><span style="text-align: left;">, created in 1870 by Silvio Meletti, in Ascoli Piceno, Italy.</span><br />
<br />
Silvio Meletti's mother ran a store where she would sell some home-made aniseed liquor, which became very popular with the locals. Silvio learned, and improved his mother's recipe, and to this day, still uses the same ingredients and distillation technique to make Anisetta. The main ingredient is green aniseed, which is typical of the Mediterranean region. Meletti is now known mostly for its Anisetta, but it also makes other types of <i>aperitivo</i> such as <a href="http://www.meletti.it/UK/products_sambuca.html" target="_blank">Sambuca</a>, <a href="http://www.meletti.it/UK/products_amaromeletti.html" target="_blank">Amaro</a>, and <a href="http://www.meletti.it/UK/products_limoncello.html" target="_blank">Limoncello</a>, among other products (you might be tempted by their <a href="http://www.meletti.it/UK/products_punchcioccolato.html" target="_blank">Chocolate Punch</a>, or their <a href="http://www.meletti.it/UK/products_punchcreola.html" target="_blank">Creola Punch</a>). <br />
<span style="text-align: left;"><br />

<span style="text-align: left;">Today, you can find the</span><span style="text-align: left;"> </span><a href="http://www.caffemeletti.com/" style="text-align: left;" target="_blank">Caffe Meletti</a><span style="text-align: left;"> </span><span style="text-align: left;">in the Piazza del Popolo, in Ascoli Piceno. You might also find it interesting to know that several movies where filmed at Caffe Meletti, such as "Alfredo, Alfredo" starring Dustin Hoffman (1972) and "I Delfini" starring Anna-Maria Ferrero and Claudia Cardinale (1960).</span><br />

Michael and Austin are actually the middle names of the two founders. Each wine label tells the story very loosely based on the founders' lives. On the back of each label, you will find a fictional and humorous story about Michael Austin (read each story below the wine labels).<br />
<br />
Unfortunately, there seems to be no website for the Michael Austin winery, an it has proved very difficult finding anywhere else that retails these wines. I did find some California wine shops that still carry their wines, but unless you live there, you'll have a hard time getting a hold of these bottles. So for now, you'll just have to feast your eyes on these labels :)<br />

<br />
When I got up this morning and looked at my blog, I realized that I was long overdue as far as a DIY project was concerned. I wanted to do something that was quick and easy and that didn't require a trip to Michael's. So I decided on a wine cork coaster. 20 minutes later, here was my new wine cork coaster.<br />
<br />
For this you will need:<br />
<br />
<br />
<ul><li>19 cork rounds (I used a total of 5 corks. NOTE: Be sure they are all the same diameter!)</li>
<li>Hot glue gun + All-purpose glue like Elmer's Glue</li>
<li>Small paintbrush to apply glue</li>
<li>Ribbon (I based the width of each cork round on the width on the ribbon. Your ribbon can be narrower than the height of your cork rounds, but NOT HIGHER!)</li>
<li>Sharp knife + scissors</li>
<li>Cutting board</li>
</ul><br />
<br />
<b>Step 1:</b><br />
<b><br />
</b><br />
Cut your wine corks to obtain 19 rounds. Be sure to cut each round as close to the same size as possible. It is best to measure the height of each round before cutting the cork. I used the width of the ribbon to estimate how high each round needed to be. Arrange the corks as desired. I used the wine stained cork pieces and arranged them as pictured:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFbZGK_sJ9MvlM-9K4nTarUQtvpJ6-XvBHRsVeM9K7DTHDgJaUrSUaTh4DlpKkg6W2f1RuJdLS9LbYhhlXUGX_b90yn8XUbITgeIw1AZss0kWda72lMFtSDbHj1iYSxKQlMt7LZtbgmFs/s1600/IMG_0658.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFbZGK_sJ9MvlM-9K4nTarUQtvpJ6-XvBHRsVeM9K7DTHDgJaUrSUaTh4DlpKkg6W2f1RuJdLS9LbYhhlXUGX_b90yn8XUbITgeIw1AZss0kWda72lMFtSDbHj1iYSxKQlMt7LZtbgmFs/s400/IMG_0658.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<b>Step 2:</b><br />
<b><br />
</b><br />
Take your glue gun and start gluing the pieces together by starting from the very center:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDsjCdPn_juAkKUnfLWvaJvCkXm1Pi89BZ54RyaeZKniZ-VOANIzD38ZzkqK8XgwQsmRkflm7XBFfgscxXF8AOzJ1SuoWylv0XdQv_pMC0Na_0eHCcW1sToOlQQy0T5INMTkRboRX68-w/s1600/IMG_0660.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="353" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDsjCdPn_juAkKUnfLWvaJvCkXm1Pi89BZ54RyaeZKniZ-VOANIzD38ZzkqK8XgwQsmRkflm7XBFfgscxXF8AOzJ1SuoWylv0XdQv_pMC0Na_0eHCcW1sToOlQQy0T5INMTkRboRX68-w/s400/IMG_0660.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<br />
Once you have glued all the pieces together, you should get something that looks like this:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtmT3zqAejuSIdRIyxj6sEgPyohYvOf8UJSH-4-tp9LWPwIj_fnc1ieqH9gN3sl5jkQj-CYWpojYIZtRaCY2wjZUY5xVuOHH2jL651E6joIFrZD7VeejvXjE83TBFvOK5S3FQUSauNT5c/s1600/IMG_0661.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="358" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtmT3zqAejuSIdRIyxj6sEgPyohYvOf8UJSH-4-tp9LWPwIj_fnc1ieqH9gN3sl5jkQj-CYWpojYIZtRaCY2wjZUY5xVuOHH2jL651E6joIFrZD7VeejvXjE83TBFvOK5S3FQUSauNT5c/s400/IMG_0661.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<b>Step 3:</b><br />
<b><br />
</b><br />
Next, take your ribbon and some All-purpose glue (like Elmer's), and apply the glue all around the edges of the coaster, using a small paint brush. It is best to work in smaller sections. Make sure the ribbon goes snugly against all parts of the cork edges.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQK0bb21cSaTulM2wKhi3lcU5PqYQysK1DH4v5i1w9UjIkjQWtAG0xrSbL8FIgQ_krRlYN97w8UeR9TIX4XrQ4klJHXc3c-jgyKVFKBl3LC_Tp8oq2euze9D07HlI2QI1dDFNyj1Lpbr4/s1600/IMG_0662.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="355" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQK0bb21cSaTulM2wKhi3lcU5PqYQysK1DH4v5i1w9UjIkjQWtAG0xrSbL8FIgQ_krRlYN97w8UeR9TIX4XrQ4klJHXc3c-jgyKVFKBl3LC_Tp8oq2euze9D07HlI2QI1dDFNyj1Lpbr4/s400/IMG_0662.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />

I have put together a driving tour for you, which will take you to the main wineries of the Medoc, as well as to some lesser known vineyards, which are definitely worth a visit. Print out the map below (it is a large size file, about 6MB, so it will print out nicely on a letter sized sheet of paper) and take it with you on your next trip to France! :) This tour covers approximately 85 miles.<br />
<i>*Please note that many wineries shut down during the month of August, which means you will not be able to do wine tasting or visit the sites. Some wineries also require a reservation for wine tastings, be sure to call ahead*</i><br />

<b>BORDEAUX</b><br />
<b><br />
</b><br />
The city of Bordeaux is the sixth-largest city in France, and you could spend several days sightseeing there, with its many art galleries, museums, and wine shops, of course. Even if you don't plan on doing much sightseeing there, I highly recommend that you check out the "<a href="http://www.virtourist.com/europe/bordeaux/19.htm" target="_blank">Maison du Vin de Bordeaux</a>" and pick up informative leaflets on all of the various vineyards in the region. It is located at 1 Cours du 30 juillet (PH: 05 56 00 22 66). EVENTS: The bi-annual Vinexpo trade fair takes place in June in odd-numbered years and offers the world's biggest showcase of wines from all over the world. Read wine journalist Jamie Goode's Vinexpo experience <a href="http://www.wineanorak.com/wineblog/uncategorized/my-vinexpo-experience" target="_blank">HERE</a>.<br />
<br />
<b>BORDEAUX TO MARGAUX</b><br />
<b><br />
</b><br />
From Bordeaux, head to (2) Ludon-Medoc, where you will pass <a href="http://www.chateau-lalagune.com/chateau-la-lagune-en.html" target="_blank">Château la Lagune</a>, one of the few Médoc classed estates that lie outside the <i>appellations </i>of Margaux, St Julien, Pauillac and St Estèphe. The unclassed <a href="http://www.cantemerle.fr/" target="_blank">Château Cantemerle</a> is also here, as well as the good value <a href="http://www.facebook.com/pages/Ch%C3%A2teau-Maucamps-Haut-M%C3%A9doc-Cru-Bourgeois-Sup%C3%A9rieur/169013709840303" target="_blank">Château Maucamps</a>. In (3) Macau, turn right or a brief detour down to the banks of the Gironde, where you will find a couple of cafés and a nice view of the Gironde.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhl0ezychlzseaiZMDKRuAECvYWIgdHBdonxncmcF60hdT0qZ3WvrPYOCGiRG3JbcH5EUbuRBxM6vyMvfQW3IpZwK7J8b2Q1WuVIXrvABVYmdbaMkHEsDGUlY2GQ-Lia9QHYdodxWvCVws/s1600/wine1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="156" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhl0ezychlzseaiZMDKRuAECvYWIgdHBdonxncmcF60hdT0qZ3WvrPYOCGiRG3JbcH5EUbuRBxM6vyMvfQW3IpZwK7J8b2Q1WuVIXrvABVYmdbaMkHEsDGUlY2GQ-Lia9QHYdodxWvCVws/s640/wine1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div>Next, continue on to (4) Labarde, and stop at <a href="http://www.prieure-lichine.fr/great-classified-growth-margaux-bordeaux-haut-medoc.html" target="_blank">Château Prieuré Lichine</a>, a little further up the road in (5)Cantenac. This is one of the chateaux most geared to welcoming visitors and offers a display of old iron fire-backs and a collection of books by the man who created the estate, the Russian-American wine merchant and author Alexis Lichine.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6yj1lkA9NnsZURDIMX0OXZyRHRtUnrhGVLSyPP-OUvzz6lfxypaW49knEQtw71onSBvucjmBt5fCQmKZOELyBUdUF5rjO9tNTDvz4u5RB0HwVxG5aRvYZjMqBeSNrlJC0eG0fZ4am_9k/s1600/Prieure-Lichine.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6yj1lkA9NnsZURDIMX0OXZyRHRtUnrhGVLSyPP-OUvzz6lfxypaW49knEQtw71onSBvucjmBt5fCQmKZOELyBUdUF5rjO9tNTDvz4u5RB0HwVxG5aRvYZjMqBeSNrlJC0eG0fZ4am_9k/s320/Prieure-Lichine.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;">Chateau Prieuré-Lichine</div><br />
At (6) Issan, soon after passing the towers of <a href="http://www.chateau-palmer.com/" target="_blank">Chateau Palmer</a>, you can make another detour to the moated, 16th-century <a href="http://www.chateau-issan.com/" target="_blank">Chateau d"issan</a>. Down the road is <a href="http://www.rauzan-segla.com/" target="_blank">Chateau Rauzan-Segla</a>, another beautiful estate. At (7) Margaux, at the end of the avenue of Plane trees,<a href="http://www.chateau-margaux.com/Website/site/eng_accueil.htm" target="_blank">Chateau Margaux</a> behind impressive gates. You can stand on the spot where Thomas Jefferson must have stood 200 years ago to admire its classical façade.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUJfDcgQwusm65QOR0bde-eTV2TVqND1PiVucZ5MLXce2pom7BViHhqqB-VKNXtN1Cb39l5ISnCqeWFJ9EEMCAmawqDwGZMtD4nwgW5KXCZge7m1tRImTzLY5WH6BuDyw2hlbhJJzMVg4/s1600/wine2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="325" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUJfDcgQwusm65QOR0bde-eTV2TVqND1PiVucZ5MLXce2pom7BViHhqqB-VKNXtN1Cb39l5ISnCqeWFJ9EEMCAmawqDwGZMtD4nwgW5KXCZge7m1tRImTzLY5WH6BuDyw2hlbhJJzMVg4/s400/wine2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<br />
<b>LAMARQUE AND ST JULIEN BEYCHEVELLE</b><br />
<b><br />
</b><br />
Château at (8) <a href="http://www.chateaudelamarque.fr/" target="_blank">Lamarque</a> will more than likely remind you of a fortress where you would have seen knights in armour back in the medieval era. Fort Médoc, past Lamarque is also worth a stop. (9) St Julien-Beychevelle offers a wealth a impressive chateaux, with <a href="http://www.beychevelle.com/uk/index.html" target="_blank">Beychevelle</a> being the first you will encounter. <b>PAUILLAC TO ST ESTEPHE</b><br />
<b><br />
</b><br />
Upon entering the <i>appellation </i>of Pauillac, you will see rival Châteaux of <a href="http://www.pichonlongueville.com/" target="_blank">Pichon-Longueville Baron</a> and <a href="http://www.pichon-lalande.com/" target="_blank">Pichon-Longueville-Comtesse-de-Lalande</a>. To your right is <a href="http://www.chateau-latour.com/" target="_blank">Château Latour</a>'s tower and, a little further on to your left, before you head into the quiet town of (10) Pauillac, you will see <a href="http://www.lynchbages.com/" target="_blank">Château Lynch-Bages</a>. The road heads north, passing <a href="http://www.bpdr.com/" target="_blank">Châteaux Mouton-Rothschild</a> and <a href="http://www.lafite.com/eng/Bordeaux-Estates/Chateau-Lafite-Rothschild/Chateau-Lafite-Rothschild" target="_blank">Lafite-Rothschild</a> before leading you to the oriental façade of Château <a href="http://www.estournel.com/en/home/" target="_blank">Cos d'Estournel</a>. The road beside the château goes past (11) Marbuzet and on to (12) St Estèphe.<br />

He was a fervent pro-French activist and considered himself French-Alsatian, even during the German occupation. He became known for his many, many drawings, some of which openly <a href="http://wineandcork.files.wordpress.com/2012/01/hansi6.jpg" target="_blank">criticized Germans during both wars</a>. He was imprisoned several times by the German authorities for his satirical work that aimed at making fun of the German military and professors (If you wish to learn more about "Hansi", here is a good website: <a href="http://greatwardifferent.com/Great_War/Hansi/Hansi_01.htm">http://greatwardifferent.com/Great_War/Hansi/Hansi_01.htm</a>)<br />
<br />
Before the German occupation, he was also an artist in the textile industry, and created drawings for postcards (see an example <a href="http://wineandcork.files.wordpress.com/2012/01/hansi5.jpg" target="_blank">here</a>), local events, as well as local businesses in his beloved Alsace region. Here we have several of his work related to the wine business (Hansi's drawings have become highly sought-after collectibles, should you ever come across one of these original labels at a flea or antique market...):<br />

<br />
First off, I hope everyone had a fantastic holiday season and celebrated the new year accordingly. To start off this new year 2012, I will share with you a little diy project that will allow you to use some of your saved wine labels, as well as some of your used wine cork. This project is easy and requires no special skills, only time. You will need:<br />
<ul><li>Mod Podge (I used the Satin finish)</li>
<li>Brushes (to apply Mod Podge as well as a thing paint brush)</li>
<li>Square coasters (found at Michael's in the $1 dollar bins)</li>
<li>Paint (I used a bronze colored water based paint)</li>
<li>Hot glue gun</li>
<li>Used cork (cut into rounds and halves)</li>
</ul><br />
Step 1: Cut your wine labels to size, so that there is a bit of room all the way around between the edge of the labels and the edge of the coasters, we will fill in with paint for added detail later. (Note: the coasters had a colored side as well as a white side. I actually made double-sided coasters, which means that they are reversible, and used 12 labels total. If you only do one side, pick the white side of the coasters)<br />

<div style="text-align: center;"></div><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">Made-to-fit coasters wine labels</div><br />
<div style="text-align: left;">Step 2: Apply Mod Podge over each label. Let dry for at least 30 minutes. Repeat the process until you have the desired thickness. I applied 5 coats.</div><br />
<div style="text-align: left;"></div><br />
<div style="text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyc_VHNnCCgQQ1pGq1FaQxjkyFiUW_DkxWwrQfwg0uRw1lt2y6uSyNQBytz5wqUkT4iK7C0lGS5Rx6kcF0AJmt2I5L16nUusJjaMU_DgZ-n7lJRY_PdwQHIkxKnZfDXy77x4pOGJtPxmo/s1600/IMG_0487.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyc_VHNnCCgQQ1pGq1FaQxjkyFiUW_DkxWwrQfwg0uRw1lt2y6uSyNQBytz5wqUkT4iK7C0lGS5Rx6kcF0AJmt2I5L16nUusJjaMU_DgZ-n7lJRY_PdwQHIkxKnZfDXy77x4pOGJtPxmo/s400/IMG_0487.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<div style="text-align: center;"></div><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">Mod Podge covered coasters</div><br />
<div style="text-align: left;">Step 3: After you have applied enough coats, apply the paint you have selected around the edges of the labels. Again, you will probably need several coats for the proper opacity (I applied 3 coats so that the white would not show through)</div><br />

<div style="text-align: left;"></div><br />
<div style="text-align: left;"></div><br />
<div style="text-align: left;">I actually made reversible coasters, here is a photo of the other side of the coasters (which I liked even better than the ones above, don't you?):</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvEQYG9HN1MJMXo_PtCPrDrT8CJAtrT7CxkWtW3xYp4ZQ77UyLPhP0apvfoTrGVKmG-Evk0M6dXjUfyz10wZPl-mAVVGsnHYEdFWV6JaUbWCjwS_DTmIB_tnRHLCD-rgYvjN5oDwQalVQ/s1600/IMG_0518.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvEQYG9HN1MJMXo_PtCPrDrT8CJAtrT7CxkWtW3xYp4ZQ77UyLPhP0apvfoTrGVKmG-Evk0M6dXjUfyz10wZPl-mAVVGsnHYEdFWV6JaUbWCjwS_DTmIB_tnRHLCD-rgYvjN5oDwQalVQ/s400/IMG_0518.JPG" width="298" /></a></div><br />
<div style="text-align: left;"></div><br />
<div style="text-align: left;">To make the coaster holder:</div><br />
<div style="text-align: left;">Slice enough cork rounds to create the bottom of the holder (I used 25 rounds total) and hot glue them together as shown in photo.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5sEHnmgeoxQaXk4jTnQoBPOz-NSrfDjJkQeEsmebn-5ihC5YN8Yd9YGSlml1enHC-UhofB2OsxoMBJFJzjbUzJT69pekfmMB9O2jY5zun_YTQnIpqorFT8WjvvN7QhFabQfyaz0aKRgk/s1600/IMG_0512.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5sEHnmgeoxQaXk4jTnQoBPOz-NSrfDjJkQeEsmebn-5ihC5YN8Yd9YGSlml1enHC-UhofB2OsxoMBJFJzjbUzJT69pekfmMB9O2jY5zun_YTQnIpqorFT8WjvvN7QhFabQfyaz0aKRgk/s400/IMG_0512.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<div style="text-align: left;"></div><br />
<div style="text-align: left;">Cut 2 corks on half, to obtain 4 halves, and glue them on all four sides as shown in photo.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8sVeMl9u14tbXD2f0bvWAhHb2yANMC4nW9IIFDhrM51xe_K-v6El9Uc-FTBuyWYv32r4Qi2GjCmHZNYtH18hNmSDbe1euzSdD5ljA8bThgHxoF1h84mzexYh08YuOCufKzkA3S51yqLA/s1600/IMG_0514.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8sVeMl9u14tbXD2f0bvWAhHb2yANMC4nW9IIFDhrM51xe_K-v6El9Uc-FTBuyWYv32r4Qi2GjCmHZNYtH18hNmSDbe1euzSdD5ljA8bThgHxoF1h84mzexYh08YuOCufKzkA3S51yqLA/s400/IMG_0514.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<div style="text-align: left;"></div><br />
<div style="text-align: left;">Add you coasters, and VOILA!!!!! Happy drinking, as always ;)</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />

<div style="text-align: left;">***NOTE: These are not suitable for very hot drinks, it will melt the Mod Podge and leave permanent marks on your coasters. Only use with cold drinks.***</div>Wine and Corkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17738480294768191824noreply@blogger.com2
